Quick: What crime did he commit? Was it that rape in Sweden, years ago? Well, no—since, as Celia (who holds Swedish citizenship, and speaks the language) has explained in detail, there was no rape, nor does Sweden any longer figure in this heinous farce.
No, Assange has been thus tortured, and will apparently go on being tortured, not for any crime at all, but just for damaging the propaganda narrative of the US "war on terror." His sin—his heresy—was, primarily, putting out, for all the world to see, that gunship footage of the massacre coolly conducted by "our troops" in Iraq: a grisly spectacle that unforgettably belied the propaganda fiction of "our troops" nobly fighting "terror" over there.
That revelation, and the many others via Wikileaks, have been unpardonable breaches of the proto-fascist etiquette that "our free press" (including the “left” press) has slavishly observed for going on sixty years—and that they now continue to observe, in playing down, or blacking out, the stark totalitarian insanity of Julian Assange's predicament (just as they've consistently blacked out the truth about the ongoing worldwide extermination drive dictated by the same eugenicists who backed the Nazis). "Our free press" should be thundering in righteous opposition to Assange's horrible mistreatment, just for doing in fact what they purport to do; and yet, of course, they're not, and won't. (There are some journalists whose coverage of this scandal is worth reading, as Celia notes below.)
To the rest of us, meanwhile, it should now be crystal-clear that Julian Assange's fate foretold the far larger crackdown on press freedom, and free speech, that's been intensifying everywhere, online and off-, since the UK and (mainly) China simultaneously rolled out the Great COVID Fear in January 2020. All along, in short, Assange was the canary in the coal mine (as the cliché has it); and so the rest of us must all demand that (somehow) he now be set free.
